if i were to describe this movie, i guess i would say it’s fairly plodding and slow, with no real distinctive cohesive plot or narrative structure, that assumes and requires far too much of its audience to be able to exist as a movie in its own right. tie that in with what feels like a remarkably homophobic sequence later in the film with no real self-awareness and, yeah… definitely not a very good movie by any means.

FILMS IN 2013 | i want your love - directed by travis mathews
‘i want your love’ is in that weird greyish area between movie and porn (an area shared by ‘shortbus’) so its hard to talk about exactly. do you look at it like it is a porn, or like a movie? how you choose to go about it will change what you have to say about it. for me, though, while ‘shortbus’ is something i’d like more movies to be like, ‘i want your love’ is basically what i wish porn was more like. i’m honestly not entirely sure what puts them on opposite sides of the fence for me, but that’s the way it is. i wish porn was more like this movie. explicit in nature, yet still heavy on intimacy (something porn virtually lacks). ‘i want your love’ has great cinematography and acting. its sex scenes are built on intimacy, not on the mechanical maneuvers of sex. there is a story there, but it isn’t a very big one, and, mostly feels more like a slice-of-life kind of film than one with a solid narrative structure with something to say. porn needs to be more like this. it needs to not be afraid to portray scenes of great intimacy with a focus on actual characters (not actors). strong acting should be strived for. it’s clearly not impossible to achieve, as the actors in this film show. the fact that this film was partially produced by a porn production company is a hopeful sign, but, i doubt any big porn revolution is arriving any time soon.
still, porn needs to be more like this, or, at the very least, provide more content similar to this. it’d be a welcome change for a lot of people as many turn to written porn because of the lack of intimacy and characters in visual pornography. it’d be nice to see more visual pornography like ‘i want your love’ out there.

not a terrible film by any means, but not a very captivating one either. there are some aspects of the film i enjoyed, especially things not seen often in popular culture that deals with homosexuality. the premise itself holds potential, but, ultimately, the film doesn’t have anything new or interesting to say about it. in more ambitious hands, perhaps the idea could have lead to something remarkable. but, as it is, the film never reaches its potential. not bad, but not good either. simply ordinary.

FILMS IN 2013 | life of pi - directed by ang lee
i had originally wanted to read the book before i saw the movie, but when my only copy of it got wrecked i decided i would see the movie anyway. i’m glad i did. this is a stunning movie. definitely one of the most gorgeous films i have seen in recent memory. everything about it was beautiful and heartfelt from the cinematography to the visual effects to the writing and acting. the fact that suraj sharma wasn’t nominated for best acting is a travesty that speaks of the deep racism in hollywood. the role of young pi is one that makes or breaks the film. this young actor (a first timer, no less) had to hold up the entire film and he did so magnificently. he deserves far more credit than he’s been given.
regardless though, this is a great film that had me asking a lot of questions about myself and what i believed in. it made me tear up several times. and, ultimately, i feel changed having experienced it.
i look forward to reading the book in the future.
